Holiday fruit baskets
For a long time, many people have considered holiday fruit baskets
as boring, impersonal gifts. What they forget, however, is that baskets
were created thousands of years ago for the sole purpose of collecting
food that would support an entire population. From then on, gift baskets
have become symbols of life and community.
Holiday fruit baskets are usually made from stiff fibers, woven together
to create a pattern strong enough to support items placed onto it. Traditionally,
baskets have been made of bamboo, wheat, wicker, twigs and grasses,
but many modern baskets are made of plastic and are built to look like
a weave. Although they lack the authentic materials, plastic baskets
uphold the classic design that ancient people relied on.
Some of the gathered items that are still used in holiday fruit baskets
include:
• Fruits
• Grains
• Nuts
• Fish
• Plants (used more as decorations in today’s gift baskets)
